Disney Cruise with a Toddler: What We're Expecting on Our First Sailing
We've taken our 16-month-old daughter on six cruises so far, all with Royal Caribbean, and we've absolutely loved how easy and family-friendly cruising can be.
But this spring, we're doing something new... We're going on our first-ever Disney cruise. And I'll be honest… I'm excited and a little nervous. Not because I don't trust Disney (I very much do), but because if you've ever spent even five minutes on "Disney mom" corners of the internet, you know there are people who are basically Disney encyclopedias. They know every tip, every trick, every hidden detail.
That's not me.
This is our family's first Disney cruise, and we're approaching it as experienced cruisers trying Disney for the first time with a toddler. So if you're in that same boat (pun intended), here's what we're excited about, what we're nervous about, and how we're preparing.
Why We Chose Disney This Time
Our daughter is at such a fun age right now. She's curious, expressive, obsessed with music and characters and Disney just felt like the perfect next step.
We chose a Disney cruise because:
- The entire experience is built around families
- Characters are everywhere
- Disney is known for incredible service
- And honestly… we wanted to experience the magic ourselves
We've heard so many amazing things about Disney Cruise Line, and it felt like the right time to try it while she's still little enough to be totally enchanted by everything.
What I'm Most Excited About
- The Characters: Seeing her meet Disney characters for the first time is probably what I'm most excited for... especially for our Moana-obsessed little girl. I know she won't remember it forever, but we will and that's enough for me.
- The Shows: Disney-level entertainment on a cruise ship just feels like it's going to be next level. We love shows on Royal Caribbean, so I'm really excited to see how Disney compares.
- The Theming: Every ship is fully themed, and from everything I've seen, Disney goes all-in. It feels immersive in a way that's totally different from other cruise lines.
- The Kids Clubs: Even though she's still young, I love knowing there are safe, age-appropriate spaces designed just for little ones.
What I'm Nervous About (Keeping It Real)
- Feeling Underprepared: - There are people who plan Disney trips down to the minute. Dining strategies, app strategies, character schedules... and I'm over here like, "Let's just see what happens."
- Overstimulation: Between the characters, music, crowds, and excitement, I wonder if it might be a lot for a toddler.
- Dining Rotations: Disney's rotational dining is new to us, and I'm curious how that'll feel compared to the more flexible dining style we're used to.
- Getting Sick: This was my biggest fear before our first cruise, and it still lives in the back of my mind. We'll be extra mindful with hand washing and sanitizer, but it's always something parents think about.
How We're Preparing (Nothing Extreme)
We're not going full "Disney spreadsheet mode." Instead, we're keeping it realistic.
Here's what we're doing:
- Watching ship tours on YouTube
- Making a simple packing list, with a few new Disney essentials and outfits
- Planning a few must-dos, not everything
- Leaving lots of room for rest and flexibility
And most importantly…
We're leaning on our Disney specialist at Embark Cruises.
This is one of those moments where having someone who actually knows Disney inside and out makes such a difference. She's helping us with dining, ship details, and all the things I don't even know I should be thinking about.
Our Mindset Going In
This is probably the most important part.
We're not trying to:
- Do everything
- See everything
- Or have a "perfect" Disney cruise
We're trying to:
- Enjoy our daughter's reactions
- Let her set the pace
- Take breaks when needed
- And just soak it all in
We can compare cruise lines later. For this trip, the goal is simply: make memories and have fun.
Final Thoughts (From One Parent to Another)
If you're thinking about a Disney cruise and feel intimidated by all the "experts" out there, I get it.
You don't have to know everything. You don't have to plan every minute. You don't have to be a Disney superfan. You just have to show up with your family and let the magic happen.
And if you want help from someone who truly specializes in Disney vacations — that's exactly why we have a dedicated Disney expert at Embark Cruises. Because even experienced travelers deserve expert help when trying something new.
We'll report back after we sail
